Imagine being part of the team which establishes the very first and much-needed backcountry hut-to-hut system in our region.  You get one chance to be part of the start.

There are some important volunteer opportunities available for the right people.  Join our awesome team of passionate, motivated backcountry travellers.

We currently have 11 specific needs for keen, self-motivated volunteers. Please Contact Us or use the volunteer sign-up form at the bottom of the page. Since most roles have enough work for several people, do not hesitate to sign up for parts of one role, or for more than one role!

1.  Direct Appeal Fundraising Team

  • Prepare proposals for donor agencies/individuals, and phone scripts for follow up calls
  • Communicating opportunities to donate with corporations and other organisations
  • Design & participate in regular outreach activities and events with various outdoor communities e.g. erect the info booth and tent and answer questions at the MEC ski fest
  • Admin and preparations for press conferences, silent auctions, soirees and other fund campaigns e.g. set up silent auction bid sheets in XLS
  • Design and coordination of events and announcements, arranging interviews and meetings
  • Report to the Professional Fundraiser, great team player and works well with other volunteers
  • Please mention your fundraising experience (if any) working with outdoor clubs, non-profits, wilderness foundations, environmental groups and similar

2. Donor Relations

  • Work closely with fundraising leads
  • Understand philanthropy
  • A ‘people person’ tactful with phone and in person contact with prospective donors, able to establish warm and trusting relationships
  • Represents the Spearhead Huts Committee when assisting the donor through the process of donation
  • Very clear communicator, to ensure expectations on both sides are clear
  • Accountable for the life cycle of a donation (appropriately recorded, publically acknowledged, proper hard copy thank you’s, etc)
  • Work closely with treasurer and chair for CRA processes
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers

3. Grants Officer

  • Identify opportunities for grants and other new forms of funding or partnerships
  • Highly detail oriented, with a track record of completed submissions/projects
  • Able to develop a 1 year schedule of deadlines and submission priorities
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers
  • Can learn from past experiences (applied for vs successful, and why)
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers

4. Corporate Sponsorship Liaison

  • Works closely with leads from key organisations
  • Understands what businesses are looking for to match mandate and strategic alignment
  • Excellent follow up diligence and attentiveness to corporate partners
  • Represents the spearhead committee when assisting the donor company through our process
  • Very clear communicator and reports as needed to the SHS team
  • Highly skilled with ensuring expectations on both sides are clear
  • Experienced with the life cycle of a donation (recorded, publically acknowledged, proper hard copy thank you’s, understands  CRA processes etc).
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers

5. Community Engagement Coordinator (3 positions: Whistler, Squamish, lower mainland)

  • Highly engaging as a public speaker
  • Able to connect flexibly with different types of audiences
  • Communicate and can create a compelling presentation
  • Social media skills , PowerPoint skills an asset
  • Can recruit volunteers and strong sense of what is needed to help build the team
  • Can identify and schedule speaking opportunities, in addition to Service Clubs to recruit volunteers and solicit  donations e.g. Kinsmen, Rotary, Lion, Varsity Outdoor clubs, north shore hikers, Outdoor rec programs at CapU etc.
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers

6. Volunteer Coordinator (non-construction teams)

  • Work very closely with each of the project leaders with respect to their requirements for skills, seasonal work cycles and workforce planning
  • Help to manage the database of volunteers
  • Help define and maintain clarity of roles and responsibilities/job descriptions
  • Strong ability to engage and attract volunteers
  • Organizes recruitment initiatives to attract new volunteers
  • Communications with regular and future volunteers
  • Scheduling of volunteer shifts
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers

7. Events Coordinator

  • Work with the team to decide on strategy for the event, theme, tone, audience, etc
  • Securing a venue for film premieres, galas and other events
  • Advertising, promotion , tickets
  • Calculate catering needs, volunteer job descriptions, volunteer shift schedules
  • Set up audio visual, hardcopy, display booth
  • Participant information , security
  • Events  include Volunteer Job Fair, Fundraisers, Press Releases, Soirees, etc
  •  Great team player and works well with other volunteers

8. Media Coordinator

  • Help existing media team members to write copy and other tasks as needed
  • Manage imagery (still and video) and other media resources
  • Blogs, posts and recruits bloggers, tweeters etc
  • Excellent writing skills to both write and edit/proof other’s submissions
  • Can work with newsletter deadline(s)
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers

9. Base Camp Manager, Russet site

Construction Phase (May to October 2017)

For individuals who are skilled in or are prepared to help with all or some of the following tasks:

  • Ensure new arrivals can find their accommodations and are familiar with the rules
  • Maintain camp set up (outhouse, water, kitchen etc)
  • Ideally has industrial first aid and can serve as Site Safety Officer
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers

10.  Volunteer Coordinator (for Construction teams)

Construction Phase (May to October 2017)

For individuals who are skilled in or are prepared to help with all or some of the following tasks:

  • Schedule volunteers,  prepare and send info package  (where to meet when, who their leader an team mates will be, orientation of volunteers into project as needed where to park, what to pack, time in time out, what meals are/ are not provided)
  • Report to design and construction committee
  • Great team player and works well with other volunteers

11. Base Manager, Whistler Base

Construction Phase (May to October 2017)

For individuals who are skilled in or are prepared to help with all or some of the following tasks:

  • Weekly Blackcomb Heli pad staging area
  • Meet and greet things and people at the heli pad every Saturday during active construction phase
  • Good skills with other volunteers and VIPs, but also fine with taking care of 10 bags of garbage.
