In April 2014, the Spearhead Huts Committee responded to a Request for Qualifications by BC Parks for the development of a system of huts in the Spearhead and Fitzsimmons ranges of Garibaldi Provincial Park. The Committee was the only respondent to the RFQ. We met the required qualifications and were accepted by BC Parks to continue to the next phase of negotiations.
On December 2, 2014, the Spearhead Huts Committee, on behalf of the Alpine Club of Canada, submitted a formal Park-Use-Permit application to BC Parks for the Spearhead Huts System. The application included:
- A cover letter
- Park-Use-Permit application form
- Management Plan, including maps
- Project Description document
- Environmental Assessment
- Draft Safety Plan (later revised and renamed Draft Risk Management Plan)
- Two geotechnical assessments
- Avalanche Risk Assessment
Of the above, the Project Description document contains the most extensive information on the proposed huts system. It can be read and downloaded here:
As of April 2015, BC Parks has reviewed the application and sent their comments and requests for further information to the Spearhead Huts Committee. The Committee has provided further information and details, where needed. There have been a number of refinements, but no major changes. Negotiations continue and the Committee remains hopeful that the permit will be issued later in 2015.
